President's Message 2020-21

President's Message 2020-21

Dear Members and Non-members,

It is a huge privilege to address each of you and send this welcome message as President of the Ogston Surgical Society for the 2020/2021 academic year.

I must start by sending my thanks to last year’s committee who put in a lot of hard work to make it a hugely successful year. I must also give a special mention to members of last year’s committee who graduated early to join the fight on the frontline in the NHS. We celebrated the NHS 72nd Birthday earlier this year, and in doing so paid tribute to it in a year when it was needed more than ever. As a society we will always fight to defend the NHS at all costs.

Never in a million years would I have imagined addressing you under the current circumstances we find ourselves in, but rest assured, as a committee, we are working hard behind the scenes to plan for the year ahead. It is certainly going to be a little different to previous years, but we do believe that it will be our most creative one yet!

In addition to our usual events, there will be a number of exciting new introductions this year. Most notably will be our new Monthly Surgical Cases Teaching Series, along with our Key Surgical Skills Competition, and Journal Club. We hope to also link up with some other societies this year to bring you a number of collaborative events. Along with the transition to online life, we have developed a brand new society website and newsletter, from which we look forward to keeping you updated on all things Ogston.

We want to reach everyone and actively encourage participation in surgical related events, and as such, we are extremely proud to have reduced the membership fee by 50% this year. We are also in the process of finalising the details to offer, in what will be the first of its kind for the society, an Ogston Surgical Elective Bursary Award.

I want to finish by touching on the ethos of the society. This committee has a rich belief that surgery is for anyone, irrespective of background, and should not be thought of as a career solely for an elite group in society. My main aim as President is to ensure that this continues, and we welcome everyone to take part in our events, which will all be within a grounded and down to earth environment.

On behalf of the committee, we wish all the incoming first years and society members old and new a very successful year ahead!

Cheers,

Gary
